Just like the First Lady (and every pageant contestant), we have a few missions we stand for here at Clearly Balanced Days. You may have seen the number “16” floating around a lot in our promotions, as well as the name Alec White. Alec has been the inspiration for this business since day one. He died by suicide in 2017 at the age of 16. Because of this, we, as a family and a business, have become very involved in mental health awareness and advocacy.
I wanted to make this post this week because February 26th is Alec’s birthday. He would be 20 years old this year. Last year, our aunt started #PinkDonutsForAlec as a symbol for mental health awareness. Strawberry frosted donuts from Dunkin Donuts were his favorite, but any pink donut counts! On February 26th, take a picture of yourself with a pink donut and post it with the hashtags #PinkDonutsForAlec and #AlecsAntics in remembrance of Alec and to show your support for mental health.
We also fundraise for a scholarship in memory of Alec J. White for current seniors at his high school. It is geared towards students going to further their education in either the trades, something Alec had a lot of talent in, or mental health/addiction services.
If you didn’t know, teal and purple are suicide awareness colors, which is why we use them in our branding! Also, a lot of the photos we use on social media and our website are photos that Alec has taken. He was very talented when it came to pretty much anything – skateboarding, gymnastics, photography, skiing, building things, solving problems, and overall, just being a good person. He was shy, but in his element, you’d never know it.
Some of the mental health organizations we support are National Alliance on Mental Illness in New Hampshire (NAMI NH), Reach1Teach1Love1, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). We have participated in fundraising walks as teams and sponsors. This year the NAMI NH walk will be held on October 3rd, and while it was virtual last year, we were able to put together a video of all the #AlecsAntics team members and use that to help raise awareness for why we walk. The AFSP Out of the Darkness Overnight walk is on June 26th and although the closest walk location for those of us in New England is in Boston, the walk is going to be virtual this year, so you can participate no matter where you are!
Lastly, pets are something we have a lot of love for. Our business was going to be all-natural pet products until we found CBD! Clearly, we didn’t give up on the fur babies though with our pet line, but we also are huge supporters of local pet rescues. Okay, I might just mean we adopt a lot of dogs … just kidding. Many of our retailers are pet or animal supply stores and we love to go and set up shop there to provide education to their customers for the day (not that we don’t do that at a lot of our retailers, we just like the ones with dogs a lot … we kind of like dogs … a lot).
Also, I’m super excited to announce we now are also proud supporters of The Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs, Inc. This organization evaluates, tests, trains and qualifies owners and their dogs as therapy dog teams. We are really excited to be working with them because they combine our love of pets with our passion for mental health – and I, personally, hope I can find some time to train my dogs to be a therapy dog team with me!
Giving back to our community that has done so much for us is something we are extremely grateful we are able to do. I hope this helps give some insight as to who we are and that we’ve introduced you to some new resources!
